my first animation short

Post by nitin »

Hi everyone,

I just joined this forum and it was great to see the works of various ppl here. It was also good to see the feedback comments of the group, which often were constructive.

I just tried my hand at anime studio and created a small animation short with it. Wanted to share it here and get some feedback on it. Since it was my first animation, I tried keeping it simple. It would be helpful to get some constructive criticism, on both the theme and animation. I guess feedback plays an important role especially when you are starting new at something.

Great first animation. Creative and minimalist with nice expression through the movement. Keep it up :-)

It's clean and well done, congrats.

I watched while looking for flaws so probably no-one will notice but if I may, i'm not sure the shadow always makes sense. Since it's a 2d question mark i'm not sure it should behave like this at moments (the most obvious is the landing of the ? jumping at the end, the shadow is late). I suggest you think carefully about where your light source is supposed to be (have you tried automated shadows from your group layer setting?)

But this is just a detail, and I wouldn't have noticed if just watching normally. Also I'm not good enough an animator to speak from authority.

Hey guys, thanks a lot for the encouraging feedback.

@Hentron,
Thanks Hentron. I like the way the waves move in your animation. I guess the cut-out might have taken some time..

Thanks Little Yamori & Danimal for the encouraging words...

@eric1223,
Thanks eric. Well, actually I played with anime studio a few times before this, but never saved or published them. I guess what we call our first is sort of relative :)

@Nicohk92
Thanks for the helpful feedback. Actually I struggled with the shadows too as you mentioned. I wanted the shadows to give a little emphasis to the character, but the character was itself 2D with no depth. So it was a little tricky. I tried making the shadows as thin as I could get them. I tried the automated shodows, but they got cast behind the character instead at the bottom, where I wanted them. Also as you mentioned didn't get the shadows quite right in shape and timing. Will work on some of these things in future projects. Thanks again.

Hey Little Yamori, That was a great clip. Very informative. I was on the look out of such animation principles.
I recently ordered "The Animator's Survival Kit" by Richard Williams. It should arrive shortly. So really looking forward to it. The book seems to be used a bible of animation.
