Layer within group to move horizontally only?

Is there a way to add a layer into a bone so that when I move the bone, the layer will follow horizontally only. I am trying to create shadow, so far I've been animating the shadow separately with the bon character. I'm just trying to cut my animation time in half

try this: the main action is controlled by one bone and the shadow is controlled by a bone slaved to the main action bone (see bone constraints) with position control scale factors set to x = 1 and y = 0

It doesn't seem to work. Either that or I didn't do it properly...
