please help me with fill color

Post by Mayfly »

i spend so much time just trying to fill color. sometimes i can fill a shape with no problem, but most times i just can't. i select the shape but the fill box is greyed out. it's so frustrating. i've checked online, paid for the videos, and read the manual, and i still can't figure out what i'm doing wrong. i know sometimes it won't fill if lines are crossed, but that's not always the case. it's just greyed out in the style panel.

Without seeing your specific files that are causing the problem there is no easy way to solve this for you. I have used Anime Studio for years and years, I consider myself an "expert" and I have the same problem of fill shapes not being created correctly sometimes. Of course I know why this happens and can track it down to fix it.

The main cause of this is the points selected for your shape and how they are connected. You can have what appears to be a "legal" fillable shape but it isn't.

Say you have a simple box with 4 points. You "split" the box in half with 1 point at top and bottom, and a vector connected down the middle. You should now have 6 points.

If you select just 4 points of the "split" box, this WILL create a fill shape.
If you select all 6 point, the entire closed vector for shape creation, it will not create a fill.

Now, add a single point to the middle vector that splits the box. Right in the middle just add a point.
Now select all of the points EXCEPT that middle point and you CAN create a filled shape.

It is this behavior to watch for. I would say that in most situations, this is why you don't get a proper fill shape. In many cases you need an extra point on a vector that is EXCLUDED from the shape selection. It is that shared edge of the box described above, that prevents shape creation.

If you find that you can't create a proper fill shape when you think it should be working, look for areas that resemble that configuration described above. Where a single vector splits a vector but all the points are selected for the shape.

There are probably other situations than can cause this problem, but I should probably do some kind of video to demonstrate.

One other point...

Sometimes the shape "preview" pattern incorrectly indicates a fill will be created when it won't be. This can be frustrating. Just remember that if you create a shape and there is no fill even though you THINK there should be, it is a problem with point selection and the way the points combine to create a fill shape.
