Smart bones - Need help setting the start position of a bone

Post by DRStudio »

Hello everyone.

I've recently upgraded to AS Pro 9 and i'm having a hard time setting the start position of a smart bone so it stays turned fully left when i'm on frame 0 (as it shows at about 8:15 in this video).

No matter what i do, the bone will always be straight (90º) after i create an action and get back to the bone layer. In other words, my blink action will only happen when i rotate the bone 90º (not 180º). I've not binded the layers to the bones, as i know that won't work with the smart bone.

Can anyone help? Thanks!

Thanks, Maxwell.

I've tried setting the bone constraints, but still no luck. No matter what i do, the bone jumps straight to 90º the moment i create one action, and i can't set it fully left on the frame 0 of that action. :?

Setting a keyframe on frame 1 of the action didn't solve the problem either.

Seems so easy on the video... Couldn't find any help on the manual. Do you or anyone here have other suggestions?

Thanks again!

let my try a basic step by step tutorial...
1. create a small bone
2. set the bone strength to 0
3. rotate and set the bone in the position you want it to be
4. set the bone constrains, on 1 side put 0 and on the other side put whatever you want and need
5. deselect the bone you were working on
6. repeat until you get as much bones as you want and need

i am not a professional nor a good advice giver but this should not be too difficult. sure you have some problems in the beginning but once you get the hang of it you will never forget
and this webinar might help a lot
take your time and watch it it is very useful

Thanks again for the help, Maxwell!

Finally got it after watching the webinar video. Thanks also for posting your character (that helped also).

When you set an action, the default position of a bone is 90º when on frame 0 (as soon as you get back to the mainline action). So in order to make a smart bone work 180º, you have to set a keyframe on frame 1 (say, fully left, in my case) and from there add one keyframe (or any number of keyframes as needed) for the opposite direction (fully right).

I'm now able to make my eyes blink! Still a long road ahead, but it's been a funny journey lol!
