Switch layers using smart bones???

Post by Poptoogi »

I just saw an amazing video on youtube where a guy named fakeingirs used masking to switch to different switch layers by manipulating a smart bone. I'm still really new to smart bones so I don't really understand how this is being done. I tried making a smart bone for one of my characters that has many different hair styles and thought it would be great if I could use a smart bone to try different ones without having to click on the switch layer and scroll to different ones. This would be EXTREEEEEEMMMMLLY helpful for switching hand poses as well because if a character has a large number of poses within a switch layer it would be way more efficient if you could just rotate a bone and pick the right position rather than going through a large list. A quick visual would be way more effective and speed up a persons work flow if this could be done. So the question is....can it be done????? From this video is looks like it can but I'm not sure because I don't want to use masking I just want to change switch layers with a smart bone. As usual any thoughts or comments on how to do this would be appreciated!!!!

There's no switching going on in that video - he's just got an area masked and different things are being moved in and out of masking area within a 1 frame action (i did the same thing with that video i did of the blue guy with the nose going behind the head) - in fact you really dont need to set up any masking - you can just move the object off screen... make sense?

NOW I understand what's going on in that video funks!! I suppose that would be a good work around but still...having 10 to 20 hand poses on one layer and moving them around in a mask seems like it could get messy..I'm still hoping and praying that smart bones will be all inclusive in the future. If offsetting bones, switch layers, color morphing could all be included in the smart bone transitioning....man would that be cool or what? Think about it guys, using a smart bone to adjust a skin tone. Swapping through hand poses, clothes, hair styles by just moving a smart bone, you gotta admit that would be awesome all day!!! I still am amazed at what they can do already though. I know I'm going to discover some really cool stuff just messing with them. Thank you guys for the quick reply!!!

You might want to check this out for controlling switches from a bone...

.....Funks.....that is exactly what I needed!!! It's perfect!!! Thank you for pointing me to this thread. It's made my day..no week...whatever, it's amazing! I'm geeking out right now but I'm supposed to be going to bed. I have a feeling I'm going to be "sick" tomorrow and won't be able to go to work! LOL! This is why AS is the best animating program on the market. Not just because it's amazing technical advances but the community that uses it is the best!! Thanks guys!!!!
