How do I convert text into vectors?

Does anybody know if there is an automatic method of converting text created using the text tool into vectors without having to manually trace over the top of it?

tell the text tool to create the text as a vector layer (if you're in AS9 make sure the check box 'create text layer' is NOT set in order to get a vector layer - IIRC earlier versions only created vectors)
