head rotation exercise

Post by lwaxana »

Hi everyone! I'm trying to do some of the same exercises they do in animation school to improve my animation. I am working on a head rotation of the character Flynn Rider from Tangled referencing the concept art. (The hair in the concept art was different so I tried to draw that more similar to the final character design.)

I am thinking about adding extra frames around the side view because the widest part of the character is traveling the furthest apparent distance at that point and I'm concerned that there is not enough overlap between frames. If you have any suggestions to improve this, I would love to hear them! Oh, also there is a missing in-between just before the extreme back position. I just haven't gotten to it yet.

Thank you, Ahzra!

Here is my latest version of the WIP: https://vimeo.com/48758543 [edit: video removed]

I finished the frames for the first half of the rotation. And I also added an extra frame between frames when the shoulder is closest to the viewer in order to improve the overlap.

Now working on the emotion change and dialogue portion of the exercise.

So far I only have the blocking for Flynn's dialogue. Any suggestions to improve it? I want it to look like his thoughts are making his emotions change. I may need to add a longer pause for thinking to take place...

It's a bit fast, but it appears the volume of the head shrinks a bit in one of the breakdowns. I do like the "take" before he does the head turn. You're doing some nice work on this exercise. :)
