ILS ONT DES NOUVEAUX POUVOIRS, Volume 1 -- teaser

ILS ONT DES NOUVEAUX POUVOIRS (="they have new powers") is a French comic book of mine (ed. MISMA), released on may 18.

This little homemade teaser was made using ASP8, although with bitmap images only, and no tweening, bones or whatnot -- I still fancy ASP anyway (cf here or there : the whole series here).

The soundtrack joint was provided by tremendous San Francisco beatmaker/producer Edison, from his mixtape THE FULL MUSTAFA.

Please feel free to share!

Fantastic style and animation! Thanks for share.
Can you explain us the way AS helped on this project?

Thanks.

Well as I mainly work with ink & paper on a homemade lightboard, then scan my images, then rename them as numbers, ASP mainly helps me build and export sequences, just right before editing them in FCE. Pretty basic for sure.
Same as here, with a former music video for Yea Big & Kid Static.

Very cool! must have taken ages to draw all those frames!
I like the music too, really nice fit.

I'd like to see AS offer a realistic line 'bubbling' effect like this instead of 'wobbly line' which doesnt really look the same :)

p.s. pedal to the floor video is amazing.

That's dedication. Well done!
You might consider buying an ipad at some point, with your skill it will really speed up your workflow imho.

Well I AM considering the option actually, even though remaining somewhat skeptical when it comes to apps...

Has anyone seen anything more compelling than Animation Desk for instance ?

I do otherwise rely on paper & pens, feels good.

its not really touted as a 'pro' option, but I quite like 'doink'. It is lacking some functionality to be sure (no forward onion skin, unconfigurable frame rate [!], no layer support and more), but it is vector based and gives a much more 'flash' line quality.
Here are a bunch of tests I made with it. I think if I had your skill it would make far more impressive results. http://www.youtube.com/user/Funksmaname?feature=mhee
It also has a 'compositor' for putting different scenes together, as well as merging clips together on a timeline... also, it's quite fun :P

Another program I have which I think has seen some recent imrpovements is 'Animation Creator HD' which is a bit more geard towards 'pro' users. (http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/animatio ... 01632?mt=8)

but I am NOT a traditional animator, I dont really have the consistant drawing skills for it imo, so I quite like that doink lets you select lines, move them, or rub out only selected shapes because its vector based - no other app I've found lets you do this, so you're down to bare bone pen skills.

Advantages all round though are for using a tactile interface and zooming which is great (on cintiq too, if you want to go that route :P)

You might also be interested in this, using procreate (which I have, its a great drawing app, very responsive) - it is NOT an animation app, but the individual frames were created on ipad, and that's probably more fun and better for the environment in itself than using all that paper ;)

i didnt mention that I find animation desk unnecessarily bloated with UI stuff - I think a clean UI would really be better but it does have some really good functionality.

Roland,
you may want to have a look at TVPaint. http://www.tvpaint.com/v2/content/article/home/ It's the best you can get for frame-by-frame animation, especially when you need to maintain a certain style which has to look like pen on paper. There's a forum as well: http://www.tvpaint.com/forum/index.php.

Also you may consider to work on a Wacom Intuos or Cintiq tablet, instead of a small iPad with no real control over details ... Right now some people test tablet computers as well, their findings can be read in that forum as well.

As for iPad apps, Animation Creator HD didn't seem so attractive to me at first glance I reckon, yet might indeed deserve closer attention after all, thanks!

Procreate does look powerful though (at least the demo works look impressive) : I have tried Sketchbook Pro as well, which is also great -- the only thing is that, as you pointed it, those are NOT animation tools. Bummer. I wish such apps as ASP did include such powerful and accurate drawing gear...

TV Paint, on the other hand, DOES seem great indeed : I might have prematurely neglected it when looking for a convenient software back in 2008. ASP seemed very promising then, as I was just starting to work on this music video (here w/ English subs, low res -- no relation with the eponymous TV series, mind you), and that my big concern was to make a colorized animation in a reasonable time, without having to redraw every image : the potentialities that I did see in vector images might have slightly exceeded my own capacities, though... :D

I do have a Cintiq by the way, very helpful indeed : started using a heavy, second-hand 18SX while working on "Des Héros" (cf work in progress), and now own a 12WX, mostly devoted to colorizing and animation, rather than to drawing so to speak...

Now looking for a more drawing-oriented animation app however, preferably on iPad, for the best mobility possible AND for a faster workflow : even a homemade lightboard doesn't allow you to work outdoors for instance, both because of the sunlight AND its lack of autonomy ; and as keen on drawing on paper as I do remain, a little change might not hurt. Any TV Paint iPad app available ? ;)

Thanks for the kind words by the way!

@Gregino : oui, en principe il est disponible en Fnac, sinon chez les libraires BD compétents, et sinon sur le site de l'éditeur, via Paypal : http://www.misma.fr/?ILS-ONT-DES-NOUVEAUX-POUVOIRS

Merci!

Roland:
Have a look at this:
,
it's a TVP 10 beta on an Android device.

Being able to animate mobile reminds me of the 1980's when I was animating in cafés. I had a box with about 250 sheets of punched A6 paper with me, and a simple piece of cardboard with two pegs. The results (filmed on Super8) looked like this:
