Have you come up with a good Moho trick? Need help solving an animation problem? Come on in.

Stuck with choppy 3D model textures

Post by simplecarnival »

I'm using AS7 and have possibly discovered a bug. Or at least, I'm seeing something strange that I can't seem to work around.

Please watch this clip, especially starting around the 0:17 mark:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t-wRt7Sx ... ure=relmfu

(If you don't have 3D glasses, click on the "3D" icon and pick "Turn off 3D" from the menu.)

There is a layer of stars that appears close to the viewer. It's a 3D cylinder with a texture. I'm spinning it around. There's a horizontally jerky motion that happens every so many frames with regard to the texture. It doesn't matter where I place this cylinder -- even if I push it way back in the background, I can still detect the weird jerkiness in how it's rendered. I've tried rendering with and without "Extra Smooth Images" and it makes no difference.

Any suggestions? I'm stuck. Thanks!

Not sure of the problem, but are you using the 7.1 upgrade? Also, how are you rotating the cylinder? If the keys are cycling, maybe the "cycle to" frame number is wrong? :?:

Hi neeters_guy --

No, I'm just using the regular version 7 without the patch. There's just one key that does the rotation. Here's the project, if you want to try to do a render with it:

http://www.simplecarnival.com/forums/forum_test.zip

The jerkiness is occasional and small but it *is* there and *is* noticeable on a projection screen, so much that I'm about ready to take a totally different approach to this shot because the jerkiness looks bad.

Note that the problematic object is the "stars layer 0" group (really, the 3D object below it). If you turn off the "stars layer 1" group before rendering, the jerkiness will be more obvious. You don't need to render this in 3D to see the jerkiness. A 2D render will still show it. Note that the jerkiness happens even if I move "stars layer 0" way back in the scene. It's lessened the further back it goes, but it still doesn't inspire confidence in Anime Studio's ability to handle textured 3D objects, especially when close to the camera.

Also note that since this project uses 3D objects, it will not render on multi-core computers. Anime Studio has a bug where projects with 3D objects will not render reliably on multicore computers -- I don't know if that's been fixed with version 8. It is possible to turn off your additional cores, though it will require a reboot: http://solidlystated.com/software/how-t ... -cpu-core/

Your rotation on the stars is not equal to 360 degrees. At -50 on that one layer, it will need to be -410 at the end. Also you need to copy frame 0 and paste it on frame 1.
Sorry for bad animation

Hi sbtamu --

Thanks for the response, but neither of those things should make a difference. I never intended to rotate exactly 360 degrees. Also, I've done plenty of animation in Anime Studio where I put the start point on frame 0 instead of frame 1. The jerkiness that I'm describing appears to be some sort of rendering issue, where Anime Studio doesn't render the texture correctly (the texture kinda 'jumps') at very specific intervals throughout the animation.

If you watch the initial YouTube link that I posted at full screen and in 2D, you will see the 'jumps' in the front-most star cylinder -- it looks like the video is stuttering, but instead it's something subtle that Anime Studio is doing with the texture.
