That works great. However I was thinking about having a scene where one of my characters is unshaven (stubbled chin) but his whole chin/jaw moves with the mouth - done with different jaw/mouth animations within a switch layer - when he talks, so if I use an image texture do I have to copy each of the mouths and make them stubbled or is there a better way?

So I copied the mouth switch layer (and the animation I had already done with it) to a new layer and added the stubble image over the top. Was fairly quick but not sure if you have any other ideas to make it easier/faster?
