Can't import mp3 audio files?

I had to reinstall AS 8 after a computer crash and i'm trying to import some sound effects that are .mp3 into the workspace and its coming up

file not supported

they're .mp3

I know i used to do this all the time? has anybody gotten this problem before or do i need to convert to some other file or something?

Try a install/re-install of the latest version of QUICKTIME. I believe AS needs it to import mp3. files.
