Patch layers not working well when shading is used.

This is my first character attempt in Anime. I am having trouble using patch layers.

For example: I have an arm on one layer and the hand on another layer, both have a shaded effect. I am using a patch layer and I am wondering if there is a way to eliminate the defined mark from the top of the hand... I hid the edge but I can't figure out how to make that line from the shadow go away from across the wrist...
