Extremely exaggerated Poses help

Post by kellz5460 »

does anybody know of any resources or websites on exaggerated to the point of almost picasso like cartoon poses?

I know the early looney tunes used these ALOT- think tom an jerry and whatnot

but it seems lately alot of animation is sort of phasing these extreme poses out if you look at cartoon network and whatnot

I'd like to study some things but i can't find much

this is sort of what i mean- or even more extreme where the character almost takes a different shape- like when Wile E Coyote gets smashed and becomes a pancake

I think Ren and Stimpy and Spongebob Squarepants have carried on this tradition. In Spongebob, it seems to be a ongoing to challenge to see just how crazy the reactions can be, with Mr Crabs eyes exploding or Spongebob face being sucked inside out, etc.

You may even want to go to the dark side and check out some anime as they often take it to the extreme of drawing in a completely different style when showing extreme reactions. I don't tend to watch a lot of that style of anime, but there seems to be a fair bit of it in Black Butler and Full Metal Alchemist that are currently being aired on community TV here in Aus.

I think the toon look is based on loads of old school 2d principles like arcs, antics and exaggeration... There is a bit of an overview here..

http://www.animationbrain.com/animation-principles

I also read an article from the animators of ren and stimpy and they basically said that it was a technical challenge to maintain the volumes of the characters when animating these extreme poses.

I guess thats why the current crop is less old school... takes time and money.

Although I don't like his style in general, John Kricfalusi is the authority in drawing distorted poses to the extreme. His lessons and lectures are hidden inside his blog, some of which are accessible through Animation Archive.

But it's not enough to just study one animator's films. You'll need a solid overview of cartoon and comic artists of the last 100 years. Some points to start at are Hunt Emerson, Harvey Kurtzman, Chuck Jones (or his animators), Bob Clampett.
