I'm posting now ahead of hurricane "Irene" just in case... The video is a rough look at what I'm trying to do. The biggest thing I've learned in this clip is that stacking and connecting shapes in one layer eliminates the problem of getting everything to move together. (thanks selgin, thanks jonbo)

Thanks hayasidist. "Irene" was huge. The thought of losing all my work was awful. I prayed for my whole family as well as all the people I've become familiar with here in this forum. I hope everybody else on the east coast of the USA is OK also.
I'm going to to get an outside backup service.

looking good! i like the planet too and the ship looks so much more 3D than before
The only thing I would work towards is smoothing the connection between each turn direction as it sort of 'clicks' now at each angle extreme.
Having just gone through a major earthquake, i know how this feels. Take care, and hope it passes quickly and without causing harm.

Hayasidist, the planet is clear evidence of what I've learned from you!
I studied funksmaname to understand shape stacking since I put all the shapes on one layer and his technique for bending joints is now my preferred method. My list of influences is pretty long. I will ask permission to include usernames in the credits when I'm done with my projects.
Funksmaname, the earthquake in Virginia was nothing like the one in NZ but it was enough to make me really appreciate all that I have. There is more urgency in my work now.
