I wanted to make an animation ( Character eyes ) blink so I worked the tutorial 5.5 on cycling - I followed the instructions of placing a key frame on frame 36 and set a key frame on frame 48 cycling as instructed for 12 frames - I got the red line going backwards but I didn't get the red backgrounds or show the cut between these frames as in the sequencer tab. So I guess I'm just missing a fundamental application of the program - I'm familiar with some flash programs just not this one and am new to the program. ????????

I can't totally understand your problem. Can you post your anme file?

Blink
I just want to be able to make the girl blink using cycling - In flash script you would use a simple add and remove script - It looks like I'm missing the simple principle for adding and removing shapes inside the timeline here - I've worked the tutorial on the file -
Timeline
I can get a circle to blink using the visible keyframe and then unchecking it and adding a keyframe in a seperate movie but I still can't get the eye wink -
OK, what you should've asked was "How do I set keyframes for visibility?" Since you've asked, here it is:
- Go to a frame where a layer starts to be invisible.
- Open layer tab, uncheck "visible". Check "allow animated layer effects".
- Go to a frame where hat layer shall appear.
- Open layer tab, check "visible".
Now you'll see that pink area in you timeline which indicates visibility.
The problem you've run into stems from the default position of the switch, which is "visible" and "100% opacity". That's why you can't start with setting a key to "visible" and "100%", it must be something different from that.

The command -
Yeah - I read the info on the timeline in the help files yesterday and was able to duplicate the animation several times with my own graphics and using the eye props inside the program. But I still don't understand since my first keyframe action starts with the visibility un-checked - to make the item invisible -
If I understand you correctly your saying that your keyframe action has to be different than your original setting. In this case either the visibility or the opacity or both have to be changed for the action to work -
I just went back and tried again with the same results. It's just not responsive to the command. Under the Normal Eye Layer - I inserted my action in the file - Command at frame 36 - 0 % opacity and I unchecked the visibility and set a keyframe at 48 and set my cycle to 12 and then a keyframe at 120 and set my frames to 0 to 120.
I uploaded the file with my action inserted in to it - to
