How do I build a full Smart Bones Character

I'll try to navigate around and look at some of this info. In the past, whenever I tried the various Bind types, or to Release Layers, etc. I always stumbled into grayed out pulldowns, probably the command sequence I performed was off, so I just reverted to Layer Binding, which I understood better, even though it limits overall capability using that alone. I'll keep at it.
