Creating tiled or distant background.

I'm having difficulty setting up a background.
My scene is a flat plain along which the camera travels great distances. So, the background has to be very far away in it's Z position. But that also makes it very small. Instead of importing a HUGE background image, is there any way to create a gradient constant background or to tile it?
How about creating a sort of dome cover on which the background is mapped? Like in video games. It would be a rather big file if I were to create it in a 3d program (or will it? any tips).
Also, my camera reaches a certain point, and then does a 90 degrees turn. I can't stitch an image to enclose the scene so that the background looks believable when turning. If you get my drift.
Are there any ideas, tips in creating backgrounds for rather large worlds in MOHO?
Thanks,
