I just discovered a very nice effect. Check this video (it's two minutes, you won't regret)

You are welcome.

It's fantastic, this technique let you animate the width in way never possible before:

wow nice find!
in the preview, the overlapping line creates gaps - does that not get rendered?

THanks again Selgin.

Miyazaki uses a technique of paining another layer of grass moving over top of a background layer of grass. Changing the colors to darker and lighter than the background. Normally in a random v shape and done on three's I think. Looks like the wind is blowing through the grass.

This might be a good way of mimicking Miyazaki technique.

interesting idea dale - I played around and came up with this...
it's not great, I've never really played with particles before, but maybe it can be used as a base for something?

http://www.mediafire.com/?b633cs9ut7yswmm for the file

The emitter follows a path, and although its hard to see, the grass line (path profile source) actually animates over time

Could be great for water too...

Can't try this with my version, but wouldn't it be possible to do the same with switched-off line segments? So you can create a complicated "walking ants" line easily?

If I understood well, yes, you can do that. Anyway, I think it would be better to use the follow path tool for that task. Just create a vector layer with a row of ants, and then attach it bended to the path.

I'm still on 6.2 *g* But I have my methods when I need an effect like that.

:)
On 6.2 you can use a bone path with similar results (you already know it, but maybe could help someone)

Exactly that.

BTW: I keep a kind of "library" of things like this which are quite useful for a lot of different jobs. In creating these I found that it pays to only animate group layers. which can be filled with whatever content later easily.
