Resolution Problems... Help!

Here's the situation. I set the resolution for 960x540, and everything is fine. I edit my clips together using AVS Video editor. Burn the movie to disk. Now AVS only seems to allow video files to be burned at 720X480. When I put the disk into a standard DVD player, and play the video on my HD set... IT looks like crap! Basically everything looks pretty good, but there is an "horizontal aliasing distortion" that is happening. The black lines of the characters look like blurry steps. This isnt the typical aliasing you might expect. Its kind of like wide (Horizontal) steps. When the characters are in the distance its not as noticeable, but when they are close up, it looks bad. My question is this related to somekind of squashing that happens when using unlike formats? What can I do to get this to look right? I have had one clip that turned out fine, but I'm not sure what I did to get that to happen. I used a different DVD burning software for that. Eventually I want to use Blu Ray format, but I want to have a good understanding of these types of resolution problems. By the way... I am using the optimal settings for the DVD burn. Im using HQ 720x480. Hope someone can help me on this. Marzout

Here I tried to replicate what the image looks like. I did this in photo shop, so its not an actual screen capture... But its pretty close to what it looks like.

Since it is not a real screenshot, I can only guess.

It looks like some artifact from changing between progressive and fielded video, and I've also seen it when videos have been changed in resolution/dimensions.

Why do you use 960 x 540 if you need to burn on 720 x 480 in the end? You should avoid too many size changes, not only because it increases your rendering times.

Try a short test with changing the file properties in AS to 720 x 480.

Well, The format change was not a choice I made, but I have been rendering all my scenes at 960x540, because I Wanted something that wasnt to demanding on my renders (Speed wise), and still decent quality. I hadn't anticipated problems with resolution in the editing process. AVS is easy to use for film editing, but it seems to take out the ability to modify your DVD burns. For movie files, they let you customize everything, I mean shouldnt I be able to get a program that allows me to pick the resolution of the burn? I mean thats what I want to do right? Keep the resolution the same, and that will keep everything looking good?

This "Horizontal aliasing" problems seems noticeable when the image moves up or down. It gives the illusion of wavy lines (by lines i'm talking about the lines in the line art of the art)... I recently tried another method, with another program. It made the image better, but I could still see this effect. The program I used doesnt show the resolution of the "Burn", so I'm not sure what made the picture better.

by the way what's progressive and fielded video?
