Mike, I have been thinking of this and a really cool feature could be to have independent points for the line width. You could add as many width points you want and move them around the line.
It would create many fancy effects easily.
Maybe a checkbox on vector tab "independent width points" for vector layers. Then you could create new points with the line width tool and move them independently. That would be awesome.

This new technique is great, it could be very useful to create motion blur effect
