Weirdly enough, so my computer doesn't overheat, I plugged my sound card back in to utilize the fan in it. I accidently booted off of the US setup disk, and when I scrolled through the menu to select "boot from first hard disk", I heard that pinging noise!

However, when I tried booting into US, it showed some really awesome looking purple static, but otherwise didn't do anything past the loading screen. I took the sound card out, and now it won't even get halfway through the loading screen before it freezes indefinitely.

Could my computer be overheating? It's about 81 Fahrenheit here, and one less fan couldn't be doing my computer any favors. Please respond if you have any advice to share. I'll try starting it up again when it's cooler and I get the sound card to work. I wonder how much it'll cost to move to Antarctica... Nah, my battery only lasts half an hour, and there aren't too many power plants there.

Okay, this is really weird. It seems that every time I reload it, it works for a while then the cool static thing happens. Every time, it's less time before the static comes. This time, I just reloaded it yesterday, and now it doesn't work. Any tips? PLEEEZ has anyone heard of this happening? Should I try a different distro?

You are still talking about the soldered sound card and your computer right? It's busted dude. The card is bad. Probably over time it heats up and some connection gets "loose".

I bought a new video card for my old PC a while back. The power supply and one of the fans went bad. Computer would shut down from overheating. When I got the new power supply and got it working again the video card was toast.

There was no way to know for sure what happened to it but I assumed logically that all the heat generated must have fried it.

I actually haven't soldered it (successfully) yet, so I'm not surprised it's not working. The video card works sometimes, usually only shortly after I reload my computer. I'll bring it to my uncle's store, he probably will know what's wrong with it. Until then, I have a virtual machine with Ubuntu running on a Mac that is usable to some degree. I can't get hardware acceleration in the virtual machine, so I'm gonna try to get it fixed as soon as possible so I can work with 3d. Until then, I can just use Ubuntu virtually.
