Hi
I have to animate a spider. That is for a video game, there will be several giant ones like this in a scary cave.
The problem is I sufer from arachnophobia... (Not a joke, I am really rooted to the spot when I see one and I even sometime cry !

) so I can't study a real spider to make my animation.
Then I just done it from memory :

What do you think of it ? Does it look like a spider ? Did I well animated its legs ? Is it scary enough ?
You can look at the AS file if you want to see how I made it, but beware this will be used in a commercial project so you can't legaly use it in your works.

It *kind of* looks like a spider...but scary? No. Should be more erratic, legs should be more angular, body should be smaller...THEN it would be scarier...

I don't know but perhaps this might be helpful.
Just remember, folks: still artists have relied upon photo reference since the dawn of wet-plate photography.
Today, motion artists have access to video reference...

Thanks but I really can't look at a spider, even in photo or video.

"kind of", that's all ? and not scary... I am disappointed... But ok, I will follow your hints and get it scarier !
By the way, I forgot to tell it should not look "real", because the game has a "cartoon" look. It must make you understand it is a spider, but not look exactly like a real spider.
You were right, smaller body make legs far scarier !!!

I am scared myself just working on it...
What about this one :

I think it will do the job, no ?

looking better - only thing i think is there shouldnt be so much up and down movement on the body. the legs should be faster and movement should be smoother... he seems to be carrying a lot of weight at the moment, which contradicts his skinny little legs
p.s. i dont think spiders have horns/stings on their back side - thats your over active imagination

The main problem of your design is that it doesn't read. Some dark blob with fuzzy hairs or what?
Take care to colour the body in a way the legs get visible. Also each leg could do with one lighter stroke over its length so the legs get separated optically.
Spiders come in all colours, from transparent to black, and with all patterns (except tan). Do a bit of research, there's thousands of photos out there.

I do not understand...

Tell it another way please.

You're right. I thought they have one because this mutant spider I saw in a cartoon had one...

Anyway, I tried removing it and I think it is better looking with one, so I will just make it discreet. I prefer good looking to realism.

Great idea !

That's better. Body is still too big though, and for me, spiders are more erratic. It's walk is a bit too smooth and rhythmical to be scary...
