To attach a graphic inside a post just enclose the URL to the image file within [img]and[/img]. See BBcodes for more information.
What I don't understand from your question is what are you relating with "message boxes".

I think Toonertime means within a post. Only remote hosting of images is used. Some Forums allow you to download the image to the server, but not here!

I have web space available to use with my ISP (100MB I think), but I never used it, and I will get round to figuring it out one day Most people use one of the free image hosting sites on the web. They keep the image on the site for a few weeks, and then bin it.

i use the following services to host files:

www.mediafire.com (general files for download...i.e. AS files)
www.photobucket.com (photo hosting)
www.vimeo.com (video hosting)



Then you can either add things with [img]url%20of%20image[/img] or click here to download... or if you're fancy you can do [img]url%20of%20image[/img] to have a clickable image.

u can also do url of file but this just shows the URL not a clickable custom text like above
