select shape in a different layer?

I may be wrong but I sort of remember from a long time ago that there was a shortcut to select a shape (Q) located in a different layer than the one selected. Not sure if it's a false memory or if there is indeed such modifier key. Would be a great time saver to not to have to select the layer beforehand each time.

Alt+R Click on a visible shape selects the shape and its layer.

I should clarify:
I'm assuming you have the Select Shape tool selected. (Q selects the Select Shape tool.)
The Shortcut Alt+R Click actually selects the layer the shape belongs to. Once the layer is selected, click again without the Alt+R Click modifier to select the shape.
BTW, Alt+R Click works with any tool, not just the Select Shape tool.

Or is your intention to select multiple shapes across layers? For that, you'll want to use SimplSam's
Multi-layer Transform tool.
Also, a great companion to this tool is A.Evseeva's
Multi-layer Magnet

Thanks a lot Greenlaw, it was ALt+R, and I didn't realize it works with other tools. That's pretty great.
