How to distinguish between points in Mesh animation?

Yikes. I've been at this for 2 days.
I just started to find out how to use the Mesh option to animate a graphic. I've got a baby who's moving his backside to the music.
He's standing with his back to us.
So I get the left side to move left and right at the correct rhythm. Then I try to move the right side left and right to make it look like one backside is moving together left and right.
When I try to get the right side to move in the right rhythm, there's no way to see which points are left and right. So I can't get the correct motion to the right side.
Am I doing this the wrong way? Should I be not using mesh for this? I'm not sure how to make it work with bones, if that's what I should be doing.
Thanks.
