Image sequence file extension options?

When I render an image sequence (File-Export Animation / Format: Image Sequence) I do not see an option for setting the number of digits for the extension, so the images automatically adopt a default of 5 digits, e.g:
image_00001.png, image_00002.png ...
I want to be able to set this extension convention so the images render as one digit+:
image_1.png, image_2.png ...
Is it possible?
