How do I apply a soft edge to only part of a vector?

Hi there, I'm trying to make the edge of my shape faded however I have not managed to figure out how to do this yet. I've included an image to illustrate my intention:

Any help would be appreciated, thank you.

Two shapes. One has sharp edges and is the mask for the second shape which has soft edges.

In theory it should be possible with an alpha gradient fill, but I never get this to work and don't bother with that.

You could also just fill the shape with a Gradient effect and reduce the alpha in the transparent side.

You set the gradient in the effect's panel, and then use the tool's widget in the workspace to position, scale and orient the gradient in your shape.

Also, you can use the Point Color tool and apply a color with alpha to the point.

I would go for point colour too. More control and less fiddly.
