Found this by accident with a new mouse - but, with points selected pressing the scroll button in the middle deselects all points. I mention it because 1. I created a short cut key for this myself 2. If there already is one or someone has mentioned it here before it gets lost and becomes difficult to sift through all the comments to find. Hope it will help someone.

as far as I can tell, the middle mouse button click works the same as the left button click? clicking away from shapes deselects with the left mouse button too. The key to deselect everything (points or bones) is the escape key
