Question about layers

I am having a great time learning how moho works! As I try different things, though, I wonder if I'm working "against" the way moho is supposed to work.
For example, I'm used to grouping objects together with control-G, a la most drawing programs. But, since I have different effects for different layers, parts can't be in the same layer.
An example:

I am using layer shading to give the white of the eye a 3D look. But I don't want that effect on the iris or the pupil of the eye, so they are in a separate layer. BUT, that makes it hard to drag around the eye! I move the white, but then I have to switch layers, and move the iris and pupil.
So what is the "moho" way of doing it?
Thanks!
