I'm having trouble in understanding how to separate stroke and fill so I can slip another colour under the stroke on one layer.

I believe I once managed to do this by first filling the stroke and then filling the fill. But it just doesn't work anymore.

Any advice on this?

Usually, when you create a shape, you create both stroke and fill at the same time. You can always select the shape and change the colour of both or one of them, or switch off one of them.

You can also create a style which contains a fill or a stroke only.

but I think I found the way I did it before.

I made a circle with only the stroke. Then I used the paint bucket (fill only) to fill the purple area. Now I have the stroke separate from the fill.



Now it's possible for me to slip the white area under the stroke on one layer. Which is what I wanted. If there's a drawback to this, I'll bumb into it later.

as long as the inner shape doesn't need to overlap the outer shape this will work well - otherwise you might have to use masking with 'exclude stroke' enabled and any overlapping shapes will be 'cropped' by the circle but not by its outline.
