How can I color correct a Gif

Hi All,
Well, I was super stoked to be able to create animated gifs with a transparent background directly in AS, but was soon challenged on how to maintain the colors of my characters. Things were getting a little washed out (a lot actually). It seems that gifs are limited to 256 colors, but when I exported as a png sequence, animated the layers as frames in Photoshop and saved again as a gif, all my colors were perfect, so I don't think that "color limit" is the issue, but in Photoshop the animation was a little screwy. So therein lies my dilemma...
I'm stumped

Thank you Victor!!
That was a tremendous help. One thing I would note, after re-rendering a few times to get the settings right (I made the new layer for all the color squares for the sample Gif colors) but noticed that since I had "shading" turned on for my character, the samples didn't account for the shaded areas and the program "guessed" at the colors to replace them with. I got around it for now by upping the colors to 128, since I was short on time, but I'll try to approximate the shading colors manually and add them to the squares for reference.
Thanks again for the quick help. This is making a huge difference for my new project.

You are welcome

Here is another little tip: the eyedropper works over any place on the screen, not only inside AS, so you can keep the Preview window open and take the colors from it.
