Meaning of topic symbols?

Can someone tell me what the meaning of a scrolling topic symbol is? I can hover over and see that red is, ironically, unread posts 
and grey is read posts (no unread posts). And I can guess that the scrolling means somehow it's and active topic, but I don't know what makes a topic active or inactive and I don't know how posts get identified as read or unread.
