darken surrounding area

A few months ago I saw a tutorial or a webinar showing how to darken the outside area of the workspace, which can be pretty useful sometimes.
I can't remember how it's done.
Does anybody know?

In the menu View - Show Output only
You can assign a personalized shortcut to it and also -in Preferences- change the outside area color.

Control + J works on windows also.
