Not sure if this is a bug or user error but here goes:

I was working on a layer within a switch layer just fine for a couple of days. Today I noticed that I can't make one of the layers the "active child" within the switch layer. The "Active child" drop down box at the top won't hold my selection of the layer and right clicking in the layer window on the right does nothing. I can select the problem layer and work on the points, however I can't keep it active when working on other layers which means I also can't preview it with ctrl-R. I can still animate the switch layer just fine though.
I also have another switch layer (also made up of two vector layers) which is still working fine.
Any insight would be appreciated.

That you cannot see or preview the layer is normal if the other layer is highlighted so make sure you're currently highlighting the switch group or anything non related to be able to see the real thing.
Of course make sure that both layers are checked on and that no other layer come pollute your switch content.

You can also check visibility,

make sure no actions interfere,

make sure no switch keyframes interfere in your timeline

I would look at all this as there is always many factors to take into account.

And while waiting for someone more knowledgeable to give you other tips, I'd try to troubleshoot the issue by pasting the switch layer into a new project and messing with it.
