Quick Smart Bone Question

I feel stupid, but I've been struggling to get smart bones to work with my character rig!

If I have every vector layer as a direct child to the main skeleton bone layer of the character, the smart bone does what it's supposed to do, but if the vector layers are nested in group layers, switch layers, or bone layers, I can't get it to work at all!

It seems like I've seen tutorials where people get them to work, but I haven't yet. What am I missing?

Here's a basic example rig.

Skeleton (Bone Layer) -- (smart bones are here)
--Head (Group Layer)
----Pupils
----Hair
----Nose
----Mouth (Switch Layer)
----L Ear
----R Ear
----Face

Any help would be awesome!

I don't know if all versions of AS had nested bone control on by default. The main thing that stops nest bone control is intervening bones, like in a child switch or bone layer.

If you get stuck, you can PM a link to the file.

I think nested layer control is from 9.5
If your file is created in a previous version or if the bone layer was a group layer transformed to bone, you will need to open its proprieties, go to the bone tab and check "allow nested layer control".

I'm not sure why my old rigs don't seem to be doing it, but I started a new one using your advice and it works great!

Thanks so much, guys!
