weird bone behavior with flipped character

I have never had this problem before so maybe there is a setting I changed on accident.
So I import an already made character. When he is facing left, the bones are controlled normally, ie; dragging the bone to the left will move the arm to the left. However, if I flip the character's layer so he is facing right, the bone controls become reversed, ie; dragging the bone left will move the arm to the right. So it's extremely difficult to animate this way. Does anyone know what happened?
