Basically a boolean substraction

One of the new features of v10, with the Paint Bucket tool is to create a shape based on overlapping lines, which sort of amounts to a boolean subtraction (see link), which is a neat feature to be sure. However, is there a way to do the opposite? Create a shape based on the outline of the overlapping lines?

There's no official feature to do that, but there's a little trick:
You can paint each rectangle with the Create shape tool. Then select all the shapes with the select shape tool (Shift+Click). Now, with the Blob brush draw a tiny line over the selected shapes. That will combine all the different shapes into one.
(I think the trick sounds harder than it really is)
