Actions involving switch layers, I'm doing something wrong

Im having some issues when I try to create an action which involves switch layers.
I've created an action for the legs. Another one for the arms. Both these actions were created using the main bone layer.
I then created another action where I move my character's hand. To do this, I had to select the han layer first (which is a sublayer of the main bone layer group) and then I used some switch layers to change the appearance of the hand, to produce the hand movement. (i.e. I didn't manipulate any bones to record this action, the keyframes appeared automatically when I switched the layers)
The actions window recorded it correctly.

Now, when I go to the main line and insert the reference for the leg and arm actions, all works fine, but when I choose the hand movement action, the animation works, it gets recorded but this action does not show the red mark on the main-line. However, if I go to the hand layer, the time-line does show it in the hand's time-line.

I'm finding this a little confusing. I would expect the hand action reference to appear on timeline of the main bone layer, because it doesn't seem very practical to make an animation and having to check two different timelines to know where the actions are.

I'm using AS pro 9.5.

I'm obviously doing something wrong...

I've edited a 98 seconds video of the problem:

You only have keys for the hand switch in that action. Only keys for that layer will show in the main timeline when inserting a copy or reference.

Basically actions insert keys for any layer that has keys in the action just as if you put them in the main timeline. You only have keys for the hand switch layer in the "Hand Moves" action, so there will only be keys on the hand layer. None of the other layers have keys in that action so no keys show up.

You could do something "simple" like move a bone or something in the parent layer in that action so the keys show up there as well, but of course you can't edit the keys for the hand layer action insertion by moving the action reference in the parent layer. The keys for those actions are separate for all layers.

Hope this makes sense.

Thanks for your reply Heyvern, I can see it clearer now, yes.
