what is the benefits of a 2d animation software over 3d software
Hi every body
i have some experience on 3d software 3ds max
In anime studio we can create "illusive charm of 2d" in no time.It is fantastic tool. In 3ds max /maya it need enrmous time.
We feel an instant intimacy toward 2D visuals than 3D visuals...

Could you please share your thoughts on this view.

Shouldn't this be in Chit Chat or General discussion section?

I love all forms of animation. However, there's still something a bit 'synthetic' (that's the only way I can describe it) about 3D Computer animation for me. I find there's an appeal and magic to watching drawings or stop-motion puppets move. That's not to say I don't enjoy films from the likes of Pixar. They are fantastic but I get much more excited about watching a new stop-motion or drawn short or feature film.

With 2D it's immediately obvious that someone worked on it by hand. We can see that it was drawn and painted. With 3D there's a notion like "ah, a computer just spit it out." It's still work to make 3D animation, it just doesn't feel like it.

There's also something of a "sameness" to 3D animation that I see. When it was first used it was a cool new toy. Now it always just strikes me as gimmicky.

I think the distinction between 2D and 3D is not so important at all. The look and feel of a style depends on so many more attributes, and that's just the visual part. In regards of animation, it's much more important if:
- animation is done by manipulating a skeleton (CGI, AS, puppet animation)
- animation is done by manipulating discrete elements (cutout, (AS), stop motion)
- animation is done by creating everything frame by frame (all drawn animation, some stop motion).

Have a look at Maureen Prentiss' "Aesthetics in Animation" to see many more aspects animation could be sorted and judged by.

It's kind of an odd question to ask, like comparing oranges and apples.

Well I suppose reading the original question again...the benefit of 2D animation software over 3D software is that it's much easier to learn and understand.

I like oranges but I'm not very keen on apples except in pies :D
