Hi,

if you check this head turn exemple there's obiously something changed in AS 9.5 with the Z axe management.
Check it out:

Did they do that on purpose or is it a fixable bug ?
If it's not, we need to find a new way to make this technic works like in 9.2 because there's a lots of advantage with 9.5.

Did someone can tel us more about it please?

Rudy and Lychee

PS: The technic used up there is explained down here -AS 9.2- :

Works fine here. Did you enable "sort layers by depth" on the group layer?

Yes we tried that
We tried use this file on mac and PC:
This file not working the same on AS 9.2 and AS 9.5.
It's someting about the z axe, the depth.
Thre'se someting wrong with this technic who use to works on AS 9.2

Okay, yes, this is not working as expected.

There is a fix!
Took me ages to find it! This is a bit weird but follow along. It worked for me on your test file.

Open the "head" layer properties.
Click on the "Depth Sort" tab
You will see that both check boxes for layer sorting are checked:
Sort layers by depth
Sort by true distance

...and the Enable Animated Layer Order is grayed out.

Uncheck the other two boxes
Check the Enable Animated Layer Order box
Now re-check the other two boxes.
Enable Animated Layer Order is grayed out but still checked.

Close the layer properties and the layer order sorting should now work correctly.

The key to this is enabling animated layer order but... then checking the other boxes after.

I started looking at any masking problems at 1st then I stated looking at layer depths.

Yeah, definitely a bug. Good workaround, Vern.

Unless "Enable animated layer order" is checked, AS isn't updating the depth sorting. You can see this using the file posted. If you go to any frame that does not show the depth sorting correctly, you can open up the "Head" group layer settings and simply hit "Apply" or "OK". This forces AS to update the depth sorting that it should be doing automatically.

It was the 3D object that threw me for a loop. I remember seeing this technique and it is pretty darn cool, so I had to find a fix or die trying! :)

I noticed that behavior but could not figure out what the heck was going on.
I was moving layers around in the layer palette and suddenly BANG the sorting would look correct... but only for the layer moved.
I only found the workaround by just randomly turning stuff on and off. By accident I left the "animated layer order" checked when I turned the others back on.

Thanks Vern,

a simple box to check...
i'm happy you found out to fix that problem!

anyway, for those who don't know this depht and 3d obj technique to make a character, a tutorial is coming.
Lychee and I working on it.
