Cannot Use MP3 Files Since Upgrading

I could import *.mp3 files in AS Pro 6, but after upgrading to version 9.1 64-bit I cannot.
1. File | Import | Audio fileā¦
2. Choose a *.mp3 file.
3. "The selected audio file is not supported."
When I open my *.anme files from version 6 with MP3s already imported, I don't get any errors but there is no audio. When I import *.wav files they work as expected. Why can't I use *.mp3 files any more?
I searched the forum for other topics and found two threads where the solution was to reinstall QuickTime, but those were on Windows machines. I'm using OS X and when I asked about reinstalling QuickTime on the Apple support forum, I was told I could delete the player but cannot remove the core components because they are integrated into OS X.
Any troubleshooting suggestions or other advice would be very much appreciated!
