Hi all.

What's the general YouTube consensus on parody's without trending on copy-write infringements? For example if I wanted to animate a parody on Spiderman and post it on YouTube would I be asked to take it down etc. I see "How It Should Have Ended" does a lot of parody's and they mention something called Parody Law.

Any feedback on this, would it be okay to do a parody?

In general, parody enjoys wide leeway under Fair Use rules in the US. Parody has to make fun of the work from which it borrows. Simple mimicry or copying may define the work as derivative and therefore not covered by Fair Use (eg., fan art and fiction). Also, social commentary or satire would technically not be considered parody so you could get a cease and desist letter in that instance.

Fair Use and copyright law is complex, particularly in regards to public domain works, so it's well worth it to study it.
