Wht's the best resolution for film?

Is it 1280x720 or bigger? I want to try to make the qaulity sharper. And sometimes 1280x720 looks crappy. Thanks.

By "for film", do you mean output to 35mm film? In this case 1920 x 1080 px would be a good format.
