Create Shape Tool Recognizes Shape But Won't Create Fill

What's up with this? When I select the points it seems to recognize the shape but when I hit the space bar it only creates the stroke. Then it grays/ghosts out the check box for the fill in the Styles menu.

This is actually a font that has some overlapping spots. When created with AS's Text tool it left the open gaps. So I took the text and joined them, cleaned up the extra points, deleted extra lines. When I select all the points, you can see that it shows the red checkerboard correctly but it will not create the shape with the fill.

on a side note... I've also tried importing the text from as an .svg from Inkscape and that was a big mess too

Most likely from the screen shot you posted, you probably have overlapping points( points on top of other points).

That's what I thought. I went in manually and checked all the points though. There's a ton of points here so it's entirely possible that I missed something somewhere.

I, out of pure boredom, actually went in and traced the shape and the exact same thing happened. So I don't think it has anything to do with the Text Tool. I even eliminated a bunch of points when I traced.

I've made some pretty complicated shapes in AS before but I wonder if this one is just too much for it. But I would be more willing to wager that it's something really simple I've overlooked.

If you have DropBox or it's equivalent post the file so we can have a download looksee.
If it is an imported font you may have to furnish that as well.

This is too obvious, but when this kind of things happen the first thing to check is if the "Fills" checkbox under "Display Quality" menu (right-botton of main window) is checked (as it should, if you have not been playing with it). Just the same for the "Fills" checkbox, under pop-up menu accessible by clicking the right little triangle to the right of the selected layer in "Layers Palette".

Then, I think it's always a good idea to select all the involved points and go to main menu: "Scripts -> Draw -> Auto Weld", just in case some little gap/s exists and it be able to solve the problem in the most quick & easy way. If not... well, I assume some other kind of gap or illegal point construction is preventing the fill operation even when you can see the checked pattern (it's weird but can happen sometimes), but as said above... only the file could help to determine the heart of the matter.

I gave it another shot Ramon but no luck. Here's the Dropbox folder. I'm new with Dropbox Rocky so I don't know if I have to manually invite you guys to the folder or not. Let me know

https://www.dropbox.com/home/El%20Monst ... xt%20Issue

It's got the .anme file and the Font. Notice the gaps where the "M & O" meet when you make the shape with the Text Tool. That's what I was trying to avoid by re-creating it with the Add Points Tool. The layer in the file is the shape that I manually created. Good luck :D

Well, I supposed it! In some way... but better to start for the very basics just in case. About the link, it says me:
  • "La carpeta '/El Monstero Logo Text Issue' no existe" ("The folder '/El Monstergo Logo Text Issue' doesn't exist")

Hmmm, Dropbox seems to have changed since the last time I used, but the easiest way to share this kind of "shareable" stuff with anyone seems to be by means of the existing folder named "Public" on the root. I assume that everything you put inside it (or subfolders?) is susceptible to be downloaded by anyone knowing the link, but test it by your self and let us now. Greetings!

Ok, I moved the files into the public folder. Let's see if this works ... fingers crossed ...

Here is the link to the .anme file

and here is the Font file

As far as I can see, there seems to be some inconsistencies on some curves (or part of them) which are preventing the correct filling of the shapes/s. Just as an example, the first "EL" can be separately filled as soon as you doesn't include the smaller of the two little holes at the bottom of the "E" in the filling process, erm... don't ask me way, cause it seems to be well closed and constructed as a continuous one curve, but there it is. I have observed too that you have not joined letters as an only one continuous curve and, although it doesn't seems to be the real problem here, it's always advisable to do it (when possible, as seems to be the case) just in case.

Anyway... instead being merging and making-up curves in order to fill all the text with only one unified shape (for which you can have your own reasons, of course), wouldn't you simply prefer uncheck the "Stroke" and the "Create one shape" options in the "Insert Text" window, add then manually a simple stroke to ALL the text and "Lower (it) To Back" to fake a similar unified effect? Not a solution to the problem itself, I agree, but easy & quick at least. Otherwise... I think it'd require to detect one by one all the possible problems in order to ensure a legal shape.

Well, you can see/study the results of the above described method and decide if it can fit your needs: http://db.tt/XbUvA5e1

PS: BTW, I liked that font! :)

I concur with jonbo's and Ramon's assessment. I did some simple tests and indeed two conditions together will cause a shape not to fill as you've described.
1) The shape has a hole.
2) The outer shape has coincident points.
For the second condition, there seems to be some distance threshold in order for the fill to happen. Oddly enough, the outer shape will fill correctly if there's no hole it it. To fix this, you will need to check the outer curve for points that are very close together and separate them or delete one of them. I was able to this in a few minutes, it seemed to work.

I think that is probably a quicker way to work around the problem than what I ended up doing. I actually went back to use the text that was created with the Text Tool, but in the places where it left holes from the shape overlapping on itself, I just created a shape out of the holes themselves and hid the edges. It was seamless and didn't leave any 'bubbles' ... this time anyway

I've actually run into this problem a few times since, but now at least we have a few different options to work around it. I Really appreciate you guys taking the time to look into this one. If anyone's interested here's the 'finished' project. It's a commercial for a Pink Floyd tribute band here in St. Louis

It may be filling... it looks like it is under other layers, therefore covered... Confirm please.
