Gradient tapering to invisible

I'm not sure the best way to word my question, but is there a way to make a solid shape that will taper into invisibility from one edge to the other so that when superimposed over other vector layers it creates it's own artificial gradient effect?

Arrrgggh! I followed the link to the thread you posted - I tried to duplicate everything as it is in the screen shot and I just can't get it to work. The shot is different than the version of AS I have, I'm running 7, perhaps that is vs8? Because I don't have the little check box that says "allow transparency." Perhaps in vs7 I have to enable that somewhere else?

Thank you

I wasn't using that option, so you can do it in ver 7. Do you need a video demo to show you what you need to do?

Did you make sure you have animated layer effects checked?

Thank you so much Jonbo, I'm not sure what I could've been doing wrong before, it seemed so simple... but everything's working fine now after watching your tutorial and giving it another go. Thank you again.
