opening a gate with png layer

Any straight forward way to make an opening gate action? I have two pngs, one for left and right, and I thought that just moving forward in the timeline and flipping the layer would work... stupid me :)

Any tips on making an opening gate action with image layers?

1. Place the point of origin where the hinges are, on each image layer.
2. Don't use flipping - it has only left and right, but no inbetween, which is what you want.
3. Use Layer rotation XY. Click and drag horizontally, you should see an effect. See the X and Y values on top of the project window, set X to 0 to get a Y rotation only.

quick question... I only have rotate z (I'm using anime 8 debut)
EDIT: RTFM and rotate x and y are reserved for 'pro'
EDIT2: and people wonder why people pirate... (full disclosure I legitimately bought 8 debut off of the mac app store and don't condone software piracy)

any quick ways to get around that?
EDIT: I'm thinking of just having the gates slide open (not a major part of the animation any way...

if I get more animation gigs I'll definitely be upgrading.

Oh. Sorry.

If you have Photoshop or Gimp, you can construct the opening gate in there as well, then use the images in AS in a switch layer.
