If you want AS specific, forum member Parker sells tutorials at Content Paradise on creating backgrounds.

I think he meant that the pros users trace their characters from photos or scanned images or something, which is false if it is the case!

I am guilty then, I almost always draw on paper 1st then scan it in to AS and trace over it because I am so bad at drawling. I have the artistic skills of a 2 year old.

Here is some monster sketches I did for Halloween but they were so bad I totally abandoned any hope at making an animation for the holiday.

I think He meant from real world photos, like you draw over a photo of someone, but I may be mistaken.

I also draw on either paper then scan or directly in Photoshop, although I sometimes draw directly in AS as well, depends on the subject or the mood really!

I didn't mean to deviate from this thread topic.

To the original poster, Make the background in layers. Hills and mtn. in the distance with an x value blur and then the next layer that is closer(trees and shrubs) to the camera with a less value of blur.

The A1 scene from the AS 5 scene folder is a good example of well laid out scene that does not look too flat.

Looks real good in stereo as well.

If sbtamu has the drawing skills of a 2yr old I'm still in the womb!!.

However, as thanks to the wonders of technology I can just about manipulate my sketches into something reasonable.

From my own journey from <insertexpletive> to not so bad I would say, read up on basic sketching and drawing, perspective and color theory. Of course you will end up with a mix of effort and natural ability to reach a skill level.

I dont really post my own stuff here as I'm not really happy with anything I do but below is a digital landscape I painted a few years back. I had been learning to draw/paint from online material only.

Its not bad(not intended as a background) but I can promise you. I had(still have?) very little talent but spent a month or so pretty much all day every day reading everything, sketching absolute rubbish, painting absolute rubbish and gradually learning a way that I could get something that looked 'right'(for me)
I'm still very unhappy with my drawing skills.. If you want a cute/comedy animal in various poses I can probably manage it.. humans? nope. Then again.. I haven't put much effort into trying and may never try lol.
