rotating layers problem - rotation order question

I'm trying to construct a number of layers to represent a simple building.
All has gone well except for the sloping roof.

It seems I should be able to rotate the layers in some correct order to get the roof aligned.
But it seems like no...

Can anyone get the roof onto this buidling or is there a bug I need to report ?
Thanks...

Thanks - using the grid to precisely set origins for sides is a good trick.
However using shear Z instead of a rotation is pretty strange IMHO.
BUT it works - so thats great thanks so much.

Cheers...

Wow, great little tutorial, sbtamu. You put that house together so quickly. I'll have to give it a try. Thanks for your effort.

Thanks guys. Here is the exact same house but with more detail.

nice tut - one thing though - if you double click on the group layer and turn on depth sorting (in the depth sorting tab) you don't need to do any manual layer ordering...

*edit
having now tried it, i see depth sorting isn't 100% reliable in some cases... but worth a shot

Yes - I'm not sure but it may be related to which way you rotate the layers.. I need to do some more tests...
Using AS8

Disappointing thing for me is I was hoping to be able to construct the model using rotates only - then I could build a script to take arbitrary quad-only models and build layers with textures on for each plane...
Maybe in a future release...

You can reset the origin of the roof after you rotate y 90 degrees and then rotate it on x about 36 degrees but the roof does not line up as good as when using shear z.

I've not fiddled with 3D in AS much, or texturing it, but would extruding a block with textures work better than constructing it from multiple layers?

Also, the problem with the depth sort is if something is angled, then at certain rotation angles the tilted edge becomes closer to the camera than the wall (or vice versa) so you get odd flipping sometimes

I wish it would work like that, Funk, but the texture ends up looking like this.

Great tutorial Sbtamu. The 3D engine does have limitations. I made a 3D missile with the letters "DDD" on the side which I thought was pretty cool but the problem was I couldn't control the light source. I'll have to learn your technique.
This is what my 3D object looks like; http://youtu.be/RG8sV0Weja4

Yeah funk, there seems to be allot of trouble with using the 'depth sorting' function. I have actually never got it to work, that is why I prefer to just do it manually.

I make tutorials w/o really thinking about what I should say.... I just turn on the mic and start recording. After I did this one I almost did not post it because I knew the layer order thing might be an issue. But I think over all, some people did learn a thing or 2 about the grid.
