switch layer, garbled audio

If I create a switch layer and dump 3 regular layers into it and then import an audio file and tell the switch layer to use that audio file to alternate layers, the timeline reflects this - the key frames appear nicely.
But then when I play it back or render it, my audio file is garbled and the video file too seems to have real trouble even moving - indeed I get a note from VLC saying the avi is broke...
I find it happens with both ASP7 and 8 - so feel there may be something wrong with my wav files, which I don't believe there is as they come straight from audacity and play fine in every other app.
Any thoughts or similar experiences?

How is the sound file encoded, MP3, WAV?
If not the right format, sound files will not work properly or at all in AS.
Did you render full uncompressed avi, if so, it just may be too large for your system to handle.

I specified wav above...
I tried rendering both uncompressed and using different compression options, but it still happened - and it happens even when previewing.

Then you might have the wrong settings for your wav file, not all work!
I usually use 44100 at 192kbps mono or stereo

mmmmm... very intriguing!
I shall investigate.
Thanks Gilles!
Any other thoughts people?

maybe your problem is the avi playback codec? try exporting the sequence as a quicktime - is the dodgy playback always the same, or different every time? (i.e. do the same sounds/pops/things happen at the same time? or when you play back it sort of just messes up in random ways?)
I expect this will fix it...

Funksmaname, it's interesting you say that because I used to export as Quicktime completely without issue, but can't seem to find it on the export drop down menu - am I looking in the wrong place?
I see JPG, BMP, TARGA, PNG, PSD, AVI, FLASH.....
Yes, the dodgy playback is generally always the same - but it simply didn't happen when I used to export as Quicktime, so if you could just remind me how the heck to export that way, I imagine it will resolve the issue!
I would also be grateful to know what a recommended high quality Quicktime output setting would be for 1080p.... many thanks!

May sound dumb but, do you have Quicktime installed?
I use either mp4 or Animation codecs for export with Quicktime with best quality usually.
Only time I export avi is when I want an uncompressed file with sound.

Damn, that's what it is. I recently uninstalled Quicktime. Thanks Gilles!

Okay, I installed Quicktime and have the drop down options I lost - but strangely enough when I export it as Quicktime the problem remains.
The video seems okay - but the audio is garbled. It seems to skip very quickly.
It's fine as a standalone wav file before being imported.
This is really baffling me!

Like I said, Anime Studio is peculiar as to what format your sound is.
What is the format of your sound file, besides wav, 44100, 48000, 128, 164, 192, 320 kbps?
Chances are Anime Studio just does not like your sound file. Best thing is to re-compress it to a more common format, like 44100 196 kbps for instance or even mp3 with same settings.

It's a wav file outputted by Audacity.
Codec: PCM s16 LE (araw)
Channels: Mono
Sample rate: 44100 Hz
Bits per sample: 16
What do you think? I'd prefer not to go to mp3...

You could post the file and I will try in in ASP 8 here and see if that is the problem!

Works fine here, sent you a reply with a link to a basic animation I made with it.
