changing layer name

Is there a way to change the layers name from "layer 1" by just clicking on it, or do you have to double click .. then change from the layer settings dialogue box? If there isnt, I guess I would request a way of naming the layer when creating it, or at least not having to open the layer settings each time .. as a new feature!

In Windows "F2" would be the logical choice, most programs use that shortcut.

F2 doesnt seem to work on my Mac OS, but maybe there is a shortcut I'm unaware of.
In photoshop, double clicking on the layer name allows you to enter a new name and option clicking the new layer button allows you to name it as you create it.
Maybe right click (or ctrl click on mac) could be used to rename rather than open layer settings? Its a minor point, just seems like a simple thing to save a lot of repetetive clicking.
